Why Is Deep Work Important for Productivity?

5 Practical Tips to Declutter Your Workspace for Enhanced Productivity

Have you ever had so much going on your mind that it almost felt like you had multiple tabs open at once & couldn’t focus on working on only one thing? Well, the same can be said about our physical work environment. If we don’t have a workspace that is free of distractions like clutter, then we wont be able to focus on the tasks at hand which negatively impacts our productivity. Below we will look at a few tips on how we can have an organized workspace which in turn will give us more mental clarity and reduce our anxiety & stress levels.

Tip #1: Set Decluttering Goals

Before you begin decluttering your workspace, think first about the WHY. By looking at the current state of your cluttered workspace & think about why it’s important that you declutter it, you can make a realistic, and don’t forget achievable, goal that can serve as your guide in getting to the outcome you are looking for.

Tip #2: Sort - Keep, Donate, or Discard

When your workspace is a cluttered mess, beginning with sorting through items can help you minimize the clutter by deciding what to keep, donate, or discard. Discard items that have no use to you like sticky notes that you don’t need anymore or any wrappers or trash you might have in your workspace. Donate items that you no longer need but maybe someone else may like functional keyboard/mouse that you no longer use. Finally, by separating out what you will keep, you can visually see what truly you need. If it’s personal, then take those away from your workspace, and if it’s for work purposes, keep those within the space.

Tip #3: Invest in Storage Solutions

Once you have identified what should be kept in your workspace, consider implementing storage solutions to maximize space and minimize visual clutter. Maximizing space through storing can help us minimize the unoccupied horizontal and vertical spaces within our physical workspace. Minimizing visual clutter can also help us not feel stressed about how much items we can see are taking up space in our workspace instead of focusing on important work tasks. Additionally, you can also utilize digital storing & organization tools to reduce physical clutter like scanning & saving important documents or notes.

Tip #4: Declutter Both Digital & Physical Spaces

It is important to note that decluttering should happen for both physical AND digital workspaces. For digital decluttering, storing away files in categorized folders can help you minimize visual clutter when you’re on your work computers desktop screen. Additionally, you should consider not having too many windows, tabs, or documents open at one time because that can be overwhelming, too. Plus, your computer may crash from having too many applications running at once.

Tip. #5: Routinely Declutter

Lastly, the maintenance part is just as important in the decluttering process. By keeping up with maintaining your decluttered workspace on a day-to-day basis, you can prevent clutter from accumulating over time which land you back to the same spot you started with. It might not be easy at first but with time and practice, decluttering can become a regular habit.

Overall, these tips can help you create a more productive workspace because you will be able to have increase focus and reduced stress due to your organized and clear workspace where you work on your tasks.
