As someone who recently started a new job in a role that had no processes or procedures in place, I found myself battling through distractions, like notifications or a busy email inbox, to work through an endless to-do list. I’ve come to appreciate the benefits of diving deep into uninterrupted and focused work. Deep work, attributed to Cal Newport in his book “Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World”, refers to the skill of focusing on demanding tasks without any interruptions or distractions resulting in increasing productivity. In an increasingly demanding and competitive landscape, mastering deep work can enable you to enhance your productivity and achieve meaningful results. What is deep work?
Deep work is a learned skill where you are intentional about dedicating focused and uninterrupted time to work activities. However, should we be giving all of our work tasks the same attention? No. This is because not all work requires deep concentration.
So what constitutes as deep work?
Any work activity that is looking to solve a complex problem that can’t be completed within a matter of minutes or that doesn’t have a process or blueprint already set in place for it. As I shared in the beginning, I started a new job in a new role that didn’t have any processes or blueprints to follow. I had to engage in a lot of deep work to solve complex problems and required uninterrupted blocked time as part of my everyday routine to accomplish productive results.
What are the benefits of deep work?
By engaging in deep work, we will have increased focus and concentration. This does not come naturally especially when we have so many distractions that tempt us to participate. Another benefit is that we will have enhanced problem-solving abilities because we are able to give ourselves time to really take in what we know, what is missing, what other solutions exist out there, and what works best for our problems. Another benefit is that we will produce quality work over quantity work. In my job experience, I’ve seen how down the road someone who is trying to accomplish quantity over quality will have to deal with the problem as it festers. By producing quality work, we will be able to get ahead of the problem from festering more.

Creating the right environment is essential for deep work as it helps us to create a space free of distractions. This can look like finding a quiet space, having an ergonomic workstation, establishing boundaries to limit interruptions, and so forth. By fostering this type of environment to do deep work in, we can fully immerse ourselves into the work tasks that require a higher level of concentration.
Schedule Focus Time
Scheduling focus time involves allocating blocks of time out of our work schedules, daily or weekly, to participate in uninterrupted deep work. This can look like making an appointment in your calendar for a certain period of time each day so that no other meetings can be scheduled. By being proactive with scheduling focus time, you can ensure you will have time to do the deep work on your complex tasks.

Minimizing distractions is essential for maintaining the focus you need for deep work. This can look like turning off notifications for a certain period of time, setting expectations with colleagues of your unavailability during this time, creating a decluttered workspace, and so forth.
